RurAL CAP BIRCH Program
The Building Initiatives in Rural Community Health Program is a community service program designed to help rural Alaska communities address local health and wellness concerns. Fifteen positions are available each year to rural Alaskans interested in serving their villages full-time as an AmeriCorps member. The program year begins in January each year.
BIRCH is sponsored by RurAL CAP, the State of Alaska Department of Health
and Human Services, and the Corporation for National and Community Service.

2008 BIRCH AmeriCorps Accomplishments:
- 1,264 community volunteers were recruited
- 7,276 hours of service were completed by community volunteers
- 22,772 hours of service were committed by BIRCH AmeriCorps members addressing community issues such as:
- Organized 72 educational presentations such as indoor air qulity, green cleaning, HIV education, tobacco cessations, etc.
- Hosted 22 health fairs and wellness gatherings
- Assisted with 116 cultural activities including berry picking, culture camp, moose hunting and fish camp
- Hosted 377 drug, tobacco and alcohol free healthy activities (game nights, open gym, teen dances, after school programs, Scouts projects).
