Community Voices Project ( HIV/STD Prevention Project)

RurAL CAP's Community Voices Project is an HIV/STD prevention project to train AmeriCorps Members who then train community members. RurAL CAP partnered with the Alaska Department of Health and Social Services to develop a media campaign to promote HIV/AIDS prevention specifically in rural Alaska.

The Early Decisions Project

RurAL CAP's Early Decisions Project has developed individual prevention tools (posters, postcards, notecards, brochures, a video, a teaching unit, a computer game, a curriculum and a website) for use by FASD service providers, health care providers, schools and prevention programs acorss the state. The primary target population is sexually active youth who use alcohol. The goal is to educate them about the risks of alcohol to an unborn child anytime they are pregnant, including the time before they know they are pregnant. Tobacco Prevention and Cessation

RurAL CAP's Tobacco Prevention and Cessation program works to reduce the burden of tobacco use in Alaska communities by educating people about the health effects of tobacco and providing social support to those tryign to quit tobacco. RurAL CAP has also adapted a two-part curriculum about tobacco and its effects titled, Tobacco Education and Cessation for Alaskans: A Health Education Manual. The first unit of the curriculum provides education about the types of tobacco use and its effects. The second unit addresses ways to quit using tobacco.
